Funding Platforms

I really wanted to share this with you all because I know that many of you have great ideas and concepts that you would love to see come to fruition. The lack of money always seems to get in our way when we want to move forward; but just can’t, there never seems to be enough. Over the years I have heard mane ‘buts and ifs that turn into excuses for not succeeding. All of you that know me, know that I’m always moving forward with a ‘if there’s a will there’s a way’ mind set. I do not do negative.

Funding platforms are amazing in that you do not have to pay the money back. If you have a compelling story that the people on these platforms belive in, they will help you get to your goal. These are not jokes or scams; the people that donate really do care and do want to help you along.

For all of you who want to take that next exciting step forward you need to check this site out. www.indiegogo.com. There are so many ways you can bring your talent or gift to the public arena (start your own business), and this is a site that can get you moving. You do not have to pay any of the money back; people who believe in you and your business or venture give you the money to get you to the end result.

I hope this helps you, and I would love to hear your story of success.

Cheers,

Jo

Candida’s Story

I wanted to share this story with you all. We cannot help the circumstances that we are born into, but we can make a change as we grow. This is a story of one of those women, making a change for her and her family. This is also, not only Candida’s story, but the story of many women around the globe. We can help give them a voice by supporting them and helping them through the purchases of their coffee.

Be inspired………..Cheers, Jo

The Silent Voice of Women

My name is Candida Gomez, I live in the Cauca Region of Colombia and I am a coffee producer. My farm is very small, only 2 acres and I work very hard to produce excellent quality coffee. But I also work very hard to take care of my home, and my family. In our cooperative 30% of us are women who are the sole supporters of our families. Many of our husbands have been murdered by the guerrillas who are angry that we want to grow coffee and not the coca drug. My message is this: “We as women work very hard, those of us who have husbands, get up early in the mornings before our husbands and go to bed after them. If we are the only support for our family, we live in constant fear our children will starve, if we cannot support them with the coffee. We work the farms, but our voices are never heard, not in our homes, not in our communities, no in our cooperatives, and not in the coffee industry. We live in silence, no one hears us, no one sees, us, no one knows the work we do, no one gives value to our lives, and no one knows the pain we suffer, or hears our fear. What we want is not very much, what we want is for our voices to be heard, and to be given respect for the work we do and what we contribute to those who buy, sell and consume the fruit of our farms and the work of our hands.

The estimated number of small coffee producers working farms of 1-5 acres is 25 million. These producers account for 65-70% of the worlds coffee production. Through our work in coffee producing countries for the past 16 years, working with small farmers, we have learned that approximately 30 percent of these small producers are women. And of these women coffee producers, 30% of them are women heads of household. They are women who, for the most part, have been abandoned or are widowed. Not surprising, these figures have been consistent in every country we visit. You cannot understand who is really working the farm until you actually go out to the farms and observe the day to day work that is being done and in the processing plants. In these communities, sitting at a table with the boards of the cooperative, you will sit with a table of men only.

Today, we talk not only with the men, but we insist on meeting with the women too. We want to hear their voices. What they want to tell us everywhere we travel is that their husbands are receiving all of the income from the sales of her coffee. That for all of her work, she never sees a penny of the income and that she has no voice in how the family income is used. That her daughter cannot go to school because, if there is any extra income, it is invested in the sons only. That she is 70% more illiterate then her son or husband. That she marries at 12-16 years of age, and has on average 4-5 children. These women would tell you that 50-75 % of them are abused by physical violence, rape, and emotional abuse and that this is an everyday part of the culture of the rural coffee community. And finally, they would tell you they receive no respect at all because they are considered to have no value in life, except to bear children.

Educating our industry about this situation is the first step in helping support these women producers. Finding ways through coffee and other means to provide respect and support for these women, stopping the generations of silence from women coffee producers and giving them voice, should be a mission for our industry to look to for the next year and for the years to come.

Cafe Femenino Story

I’m very blessed to be in the business I’m in, and these women that I support in Peru, Guatemala, and Mexico have been very blessed by my customers. For me, life is about being where I can most benefit the people that I come in contact with. Whether it’s my awesome friends or humanitarian causes; I want to make a positive difference in these lives that I touch.

The women and children in ND also benefit from the coffee growers I do business with. That is so huge if you pause to think about it; a woman coffee grower in Guatemala, for example, is helping a woman in ND. I appreciate each and every one of you, my customers, for believing in my causes and your loyalty to MoJo Roast; without you, none of this would be possible, for that, I thank you.

Cheers,
Jo

Read the story below and see how I have tied women together in the world.

The Story of Café Femenino Peru

The Café Femenino® story in Peru continues to be an inspiration to all of us at Organic Products Trading Company. When we first started this project in 2004 with 464 women coffee producers, we were not sure what the reactions to this concept would by either roasters or consumers. But we did understand that this was truly a ground breaking initiative and that we were compelled to move forward with it. For our company, there was no question that Café Femenino was a very important project with global implications.

What we could not predict was if the market accept the product and if all of our efforts would help these women coffee producers? Today we can answer many of these questions, and in all cases the answer is a resounding, yes!

For the past three summers we have visited with the women coffee producers in Peru, traveling to many of these remote communities and learning about their lives and the effects that Café Femenino is having on their lives. For the past three years in July they have held the Annual Encounter of the Women of the CECANOR Cooperative. Each year we have been able to observe the personal growth of these women.

In the first meeting we participated, which coincided with the first production year of Café Femenino, we shared with them the final version of the Café Femenino logo that we had collaborated on, and we talked about each of our expectations and our commitments to each other to insure the success of Café Femenino. As the women spoke they hung their heads or hid their faces when speaking, they seemed fearful and unsure of themselves. But in their eyes I could see hope. Many of the women had their children with them for there was no one who helped them with their care.

In the second years meeting one of the glaring differences was the absence of their children. I asked them where their children were, and their response was quite simply, amazing. They told me their children were home and their husbands were taking care of them, as they were attending a business meeting! I knew this was huge progress in just one year by gaining the support of their husbands. Their demeanor had changed also, though they were hesitant to share with me when I asked how Café Femenino was affecting their lives. After the first hand was raised to talk to me, hands around the room began to wave. Everyone was excited to share with me their successes. The women told me that with Café Femenino they felt like for the first time in their lives they had some control over their lives. They told it was the first time in their lives that they had ever had any money of their own. They told me that their husbands were supporting them and they were supporting each other. For me the tears of joy and hope rolled down my face. It was possible, we were changing lives and families and communities. I felt so proud of these brave and pioneering women. They were my inspiration, my shining lights.

But the year 2006 brought yet even more profound changes. The group of women coffee producers now had grown to 755 women producers. One of the things the women love the most about Café Femenino was the meetings and the relationships they were now developing with other women. Relationships with other women never existed before Café Femenino, but in 2006 190 meetings were held with the women to provide capacity building activities that they did together. Café Femenino was the program that dreams were built on and of. In this year the women had grown even more. The shy but hopeful women of one year ago had grown to women of purpose and vision, women who were now becoming dynamic with voices that would be heard. In each of their zonal organizations they had developed rudimentary business plans. Ideas they shared with us of how they could grow even more, creating more opportunities for themselves through thoughtful and creative planning. Some of their ideas were to begin small animal breeding projects and seed projects, that in time, would help feed their families, improve their health and provide additional income by selling the excess animals and produce into their local markets. They also had a plan to roast and sell their Café Femenino coffee at the larger cities and in the airport in Chiclayo, Peru. Yes, they had a number of ideas, they even brought some of their prototype products that they had created and want to sell to show us. These were not the same women we met only a few years ago; these were women who now knew they had value. These were women who are creating a new generation.

These ideas have been drafted into grant requests that have been submitted to the Café Femenino Foundation, and this past year the foundation has worked and continues to work to raise funds to provide the seed capital to give these women a chance to make their dreams come true. For roasters that are donating a portion of your proceeds to the foundation, these women are so grateful for the opportunities that these funds are providing. Additionally this past year a grant from the foundation was given to these women to provide funds to allow 600 daughters of women producers to go to school. The foundation hopes to be able to continue to supply funds so that for the future girls will also have this opportunity for education.

But for all of the changes that have occurred with the women over the past few years, the most astonishing change is not the changes in the women, but the changes in the men. It is a change that we never expected, and yet in just a short time, we are seeing and hearing the men verbalize their support for the women. The cooperative board of directors told us that Café Femenino is the most important work that they have ever done. The men have acknowledged the abuse they were responsible for and are admitting that they now see the errors in their thinking. Today they tell us how much they value their wives. The women have smiles on their faces and a gentle touch for their husbands, in their own way accepting what was and appreciating what now is and dreaming about what can be in the future.

Coffee, My Favorite Form of Time Travel

By June Pagan

Every morning, long before my family awakens, I travel through time. A cup of coffee is my vessel.

On one morning, I travel to RegoPark, in Queens, New York. The year is 1966. I am sitting at the counter of a luncheonette called “The Hamburger Train.” The aroma of fresh brewed coffee wafts throughout the noisy coffee shop, while I await the arrival of my charbroiled burger, which comes to me perched atop a train car called while I wait for my charbroiled burger to reach the station, my burger perched on top of a train car called…

I am too young to drink coffee, but the combination of brew and burger leave a strong olfactory memory impression in a child’s mind. I think to myself, “It doesn’t get better than this.”

On some mornings, I travel to a small airport. My father and I are waiting for the weather to lift so that we can continue on our adventure in his Cessna aircraft. We share cups of coffee and conversation in the airport lounge. We talk about future travels, and, again, I am thinking and I am thinking, “It doesn’t get better than this.”

One recent morning, over a cup of MoJo Roast Viking Thunder, my thoughts transformed me to the top deck of a 100′ motor yacht called “The Islander.” The year is 1989 and we are in a 6″ sea, heading for St. Bart’s from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. I am on caffeine high and feeling the ocean spray on my face. A school ofDolphins kisses the hull as seagulls sing from above. And, once again, I am thinking…. “It doesn’t get better than this.”

This morning, I traveled into the future. It is year 2014 and I am the sleepy CentralCoast town of Los Osos, California. In a bay front cottage, I am sipping MoJo Roast whilst gazing out the bay window that overlooks a bird sanctuary. I catch a glimpse of Morro Rock in the distance. The summer sun plays a dance upon the tall pines. I can year the sound of my husband’s lathe spinning in his workshop; my son is at the water’s edge, walking our bull terrier. And, yes, again, I am thinking… “It doesn’t get better than this.”

And just as I am in the midst of that reverie, I find myself suddenly transformed back to the here and now – gazing out the window of my Marina del Rey kitchen, where I am brewing a fresh pot of coffee to serve with my family’s breakfast. Yes, I am thinking, as the enticingly rich aroma of brewing coffee wafts across the kitchen space, “It doesn’t get better than this.” Thank you, MoJo Roast, for transporting me in time and place – and for being a comforting and reliable companion.
